Former top referee rules on this controversial Newcastle v Tottenham incident

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.

The former top referee has now given his call on this incident in the Newcastle v Tottenham match.

Dermot Gallagher looking at what happened just after the hour mark at St James’ Park.

Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about this Newcastle 4 Tottenham 0 controversy:

Incident:

With Newcastle United cruising 3-0 up and Tottenham totally outclassed, frustration getting the better of James Maddison. A ridiculous very high challenge with his studs into the back of Jacob Murphy, up towards the high back / neck area. The referee giving only a yellow card and VAR not intervening.

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

Yellow card correct, not a red.

Dermot Gallagher saying:

“Got to be careful we’re not too rash.

“It’s not a nice tackle but he doesn’t follow through.”

Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith adding:

“He (Maddison) pulls back when he realises he’s going to make contact.”
