Newcastle 1 Everton 1 – Instant Newcastle United fan / writer reaction

Newcastle 1 Everton 1 – Tuesday 2 April 7.30pm

Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘We deserved all three points with a makeshift team against a very poor Everton side but it was not to be.

Their substitutes made a difference, ours did too, but sadly not for the right reasons, but I don’t want to be hard on any of them with us being in such a difficult position personnel wise.

Here’s hoping for some players returning for Saturday.’

Jamie Smith:

‘Absolutely sick.

Different entirely to Saturday as United looked solid throughout but that about sums up our luck this season.

The Isak offside I haven’t seen outside the ground but from what I’ve picked up it’s one of those ridiculous marginal calls that VAR needs to stop ruining.

Then yet another bloody injury costs us as Hall goes off and Dummett comes on to give away a daft penalty.

Of all the limited sides Newcastle have put out this season, Everton have been spawns enough to face basically a 12 man squad twice, and this may be enough to keep them up.

Should have put the game to bed but an inadequate point and the mood is one of Europe disappearing as disasters continue to fall.

Bruno and Burn excellent, just not enough.’

GToon:

‘A game too far for a team on its knees with injuries.

A point is decent but annoying to give it away with two mins left.

Hopefully no more injuries.

The EPL will take more points off Everton this season than we have, which is maybe why we are struggling to get top six.

Everton, Luton, Forest and Bournemouth, – 8 games and 1 win, 4 defeats and 3 draws, 6 points out of 24 against that lot. Not good enough really.’

David Punton:

‘Paying the penalty as two points are dropped at home against a pretty average Everton side.

Our second game in four days taking a toll in the second half and the spot kick conceded amid a rare sub appearance by Paul Dummett, once the first name on the team sheet in this parish, but no more.

This was also a threadbare Newcastle, with 12 players missing through injury and Gordon suspended.

You sense Dyche came for a point and got what he wanted in their battle to get clear of the bottom three.

We advance to 44 points, which ain’t exactly a shabby total thus far.

The knives seem to be out for Dummett and Longstaff on social media but the players need support.

We had a miracle on Saturday and sadly we didn’t see one tonight, so we have to take the point and move on.’

Tony Mallabar:

‘Nobody will be chanting louder than me at Fulham “Eddie Howe’s black and white army” but we need Rafa back in my opinion.

We had everything in our favour tonight, yet still couldn’t beat the scouse mackems.

The difference between Rafa and Eddie is, if you weren’t performing under Rafa you got dropped (Matt Ritchie being the obvious exception to that rule).’

Billy Miller:

‘I don’t want to be too reactive but Dummett gave away a penalty when Young was getting nowhere near the ball.

A senseless opportunity to allow Calvert-Lewin his first goal of the century.

We had a near second string team starting tonight but Everton are truly woeful and that is 2 points horrendously dropped.

How pivotal that will be come the end of the season we will find out later.

This was the fifth game I’ve watched abroad this season and we’ve not won any.

I’ll just go to bed next time!’

Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:

‘Wasn’t that all rather predictable?

Nowt on the bench, running on empty and unable to see the game out.

How we needed a second before Dyche gave them an injection of fresh legs on the hour, but Isak was judged offside by VAR, when we thought Big Dan Burn had put the ball in the Everton net to give us that all important breathing space.

With the injury crisis showing no sign of abating, December looks likely to repeat itself as we trundle towards the end of the season.

Mind you, we missed some great chances and Pickford was serenaded by the away supporters at the final whistle. Very annoying.’

Bazoox:

‘After being in the ascendancy we let an awful Everton side back into the game.

I am seriously considering giving up on watching live football because I hate VAR so much.

All the enjoyment due to the games once unique spontaneity has now been cruelly eradicated.

VAR should be abolished with immediate effect but that would cost ex-referees and FA has-beens too much money wouldn’t it?

Two precious points lost tonight after a team with a Rolls Royce in it was pegged back by a team full of Skodas.’
