Newcastle 4 West Ham 3 – Instant Newcastle United fan / writer reaction

Newcastle 4 West Ham 3 – Saturday 30 March 12.30pm

Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘Well what can you say about that!!!

UNBELIEVABLE and have to be honest I didn’t see it coming at 1-3 and the way we were playing.

The left side was transformed with Hall, Anderson and Barnes who all played their part in the revival, especially Barnes!!

They never gave up and I’m still shaking my head as to how they turned that game around.

What a brilliant afternoon and the all important 3 points in the bag, bring on Everton…’

Simon Ritter:

‘And that, ladies and gentleman, is why football is the greatest game.

A match littered with injuries, wayward passing, pedestrian play and wasteful finishing, still produced an enthralling and unforgettable spectacle.

When West Ham went 3-1 up and we showed little likelihood of responding, this seemed to be the day the season died for Newcastle United.

A replacement centre-half injured, two substitutes also taking an early bath, an understandably disjointed performance and several of the fit players putting in sub-standard displays.

But a never-say-die spirit, two ice-cool penalties from Isak and two gems from Barnes, ultimately earned the Magpies three points.

Lascelles, Livramento and Almiron are unlikely to figure against Everton on Tuesday because of injury. Gordon certainly will not, having collected his ninth and tenth yellow cards of the Premier League season for two utterly avoidable offences.

Schar was limping for the final, glorious 30 minutes, Dubravka looked all at sea, Krafth seemed lost and Longstaff was off the pace until push came to shove, when he did as much as anybody to hold things together.

A bizarre match in a bizarre season.

And the strangest incident of all?

That supreme diplomat Eddie Howe was booked for offending the officials, who I thought did a decent job amid the chaos. You couldn’t make it up…’

GToon:

‘Supporting this team: the highest highs and the lowest lows.

Nothing quite like it is there.

Oh and final word for the west Han fans – “ole”. Hahaha.’

David Punton:

‘Agony to extreme ecstasy. Football, eh!

United have ridden a roller coaster and emerged with some truly late drama as the Londoners collapsed spectacularly from 3-1 up.

It was chaos but it’s ended up being a game we will talk about for a long time.

We found a way. The obituaries for our defending can wait, as that was just a brilliant response from the players.

Barnes will get the headlines and with Howe under pressure to get a win, he can breathe an enormous sigh of relief tonight.

Happy blummin Easter! Three points, resurrected.’

Tony Mallabar:

‘Our worst performance of the season ends up with a stunning victory.

Big Dan Burn slotted well into the centre half position and Lewis Hall looked canny.

Unfortunately, skippy got sent off and although this didn’t cost us today, it will come Tuesday.’

Billy Miller:

‘What… a… result!

I don’t know how we were 3-1 down.

We were much the better team, conceded three shocking goals and had three injuries.

It didn’t feel like it could get any worse.

Our fans were being completely outperformed by the visitors as well.

As soon as we got that second goal, it all shifted.

Our fans stirred, the team was relentless and together we roared to a deserved and vital victory.

Barnes… brilliant.’

Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:

‘I’ll take that.

Superb fightback after we looked dead and buried.

No thanks to the referee mind.

Shocking officiating.

I thought he was going to play on until West Ham equalised.’

Bazoox:

‘Great start and a definite pen. These VAR delays are spoiling everyone’s entertainment though.

After Lascelles went off we were disjointed initially and West Ham soon capitalised.

Nowt wrong with West Ham’s second goal and some Toon fans seeming to be turning into a bunch of wimps.

Dreadful defending from a position of ascendancy for the Irons’ third goal.

Has any club other than Newcastle ever subbed two substitutes?

At this time things were pretty woeful all rround and we are all obviously extremely disappointed, so emotions were naturally running high in Tynemouth Club.

Eddie Howe must have been a worried man but this game was far from over.

The Toon never ever give up and one of the best finishers we have at the club in Harvey Barnes, capped an unforgettable comeback.

Man of the Match Anthony Gordon even managed to get himself sent off.

Newcastle United….I love you!’
